DuPont expands Vamac portfolio

DuPont has expanded its Vamac product range with three new grades of this ethylene-acrylate rubber. Vamac MR delivers, as DuPont points out, benefits as an impact modifier for adhesives, coatings and other thermoset resin systems. Vamac DHC offers a higher state of cure and improved compression set within the business range of peroxide curable dipolymers, and is of interest to applications requiring fast curing with no-post-cure. Whilst Vamac GXF has already found broad use in applications requiring superior resistance to dynamic load at high temperature and in presence of oil. The appeal of the broadened product offering is reflected in recent, notable applications, such as the use of Vamac in gaskets for the new Airbus A380, propshaft boots for the transmissions of four-wheel drive ca

TPE gives soft touch to ultrasound probe

Huntleigh Healthcare, Bedfordshire, UK, has chosen Thermolast K from German TPE supplier Kraiburg TPE to add a touch of comfort to its Doppler Ultrasound probe. The TPE compound ensures a soft, smooth surface area on the skin contact section of the probe, improving comfort levels for patients undergoing ultrasound monitoring. In addition, the use of the same TPE to provide strain relief at the cable entry point on the probe has replaced the need for a separate strain relief component, thereby eliminating an assembly step and speeding up the manufacturing process. It is P.P. Injection Moulds and Moulding Ltd, Calne, Wiltshire, UK, who manufactures the probe on behalf of Huntleigh. Kraiburg TPE’s products are available worldwide. Subsidiaries and sales offices are based in Great Brit

Yokohama launches “Super Stream”

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced that it has augmented its Seaflex line of marine hoses with a new product called the Super Stream hose. The company says that above all its durability, especially in rough seas, is a hallmark of the new product. Form-fitted floats on the flange connections between hose segments help distribute tension caused by waves and currents evenly over the hose line. The durability of the hose also benefits from a dual-carcass structure and from a dual-tube lining. The hose offers the additional benefit of optimised reserve buoyancy. That helps keep the hose afloat in any sea conditions. Newly developed sponge material provides the hose with a minimum reserve buoyancy of 25 % and an average reserve buoyancy of 30 %. In addition, the floats on the flange co

Trexel presents results of joint extrusion program with Santoprene

Woburn Hills based US-company Trexel, Inc. will present the results of a two-year development program with Santoprene Specialty Products of Exxon/Mobil to produce foamed TPV automotive weather seals at NPE in Chicago. Customers who use the Santoprene material and the MuCell system to manufacture automotive weather seals are exempt from Trexel license fees.

Alpha Technologies presents rubber capillary rheometer ARC 2020

Alpha Technologies, Swindon, UK, has introduced a new capillary rheometer, the ARC 2020. The instrument can test both rubber and thermoplastic materials. It is designed for a range of applications, such as providing data for flow simulation software, now widely used in the tyre industry to predict and control extrusion in the factory. Other application areas include measuring compounds to estimate extruder output and evaluate injection molding performance. Capillary data can be provided over a wide range of shear rates 1-29,000 S-1 and from 50 to 430 °C, enabling a wide range of rubbers and thermoplastics to be tested. The instrument also has an optional laser die swell micrometer.

Rubber injection moulding machine with optimised operating height

For over 40 years, Austrian machine supplier Engel, Schwertberg, has been offering a comprehensive range of machines specially designed for the processing of rubber compounds. A new product within the company’s Compact series is a vertical rubber injection machine with a new construction for the clamping unit. The most remarkable thing is here as a result the ergonomically favourable operating height so that no platform is required. The clamping system needs only 775 mm from the floor up to the top of the heating platen. The machine features a FIFO injection unit which ensures optimum processing of the material by the first-in/first-out operating principle of the plasticising unit. Engel presents this machine as well as its tiebarless Elast 280/120 Victory and the Victory 310/110 for liqu

Allrounders for rubber processing

German injection moulding machine supplier Arburg from Loßburg is known for its equipment for plastic processing. What is less known is that the company also supplies equipment for rubber and elastomer processing. At this year’s rubber conference in Nuremberg the company shows an Allrounder 420 A with a clamping force of 1000 kN and two injection units, size 400 and 170, that demonstrates how plastics and liquid silicones can be combined in a single part. In a 4+4-cavity mould, a plug is made from PBT and a radial seal and cable seal made from LSR is moulded onto it. The machine operates with a total of 18 mould heating circuits, a vacuum unit, a second cooling water distributor to control the temperature of the mould and the cool runner separately, a hydraulic core pull for rotating

First thermoset foam suitable for thermoforming

BASF’s new Basotect TG foam on the basis of melamine resin is introduced by the company as the first thermoset foam that can be shaped under heat. The impregnating step that used to be indispensable for thermoforming this material is now gone, vastly simplifying its processing. The first vehicle parts have already gone into serial production. Unlike thermoplastics, thermoset materials such as Basotect cannot be shaped or melted under heat. This is why until now, Basotect had to be impregnated with adhesives, pressed and then dried in order to form complex, three-dimensional automotive parts. This costly impregnation step is a thing of the past for the new Basotect TG; now it can be directly compression-moulded under the usual processing conditions, so that making moulded parts is easier

Oil resistanct LSFOH compounds for wire and cable applications

PolyOne Belgium SA, Assesse, has recently introduced a new halogen-free, flame-retardant LSFOH compound (= low-smoke and fume compounds, zero halogen) for applications requiring high oil resistance. The ECCOH 5803 compound exhibits according to the company outstanding oil resistance performances at elevated temperatures in the thermoplastic state. Following the IEC 60811-2-1 test method, this compound still retains very good tensile and elongation properties after 7 days immersion at 100 °C in the industry reference oils (IRM 902 and 903). ECCOH 5803 also combines very good processability, with good electrical properties and good flame retardancy. This compound has a 34 % LOI, flammability temperature index 320 °C and also gives good char formation. In its thermoplastic state, this c

BLIC becomes ETRMA

The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association has announced the creation of its new association ETRMA which replaces the “old” BLIC (Bureau de Liaison des Industries du Caoutchouc), founded in 1959. ETRMA members are tyre manufactures having industrial plants in Europe (Bridgestone Europe, Continental, Cooper-Tire, Goodyear-Dunlop, Marangoni, Michelin, Nokian, Pirelli, and Vredestein) and the national rubber manufacturers associations of Belgium (Febelplast), Finland (RMAF), France (SNCP), Germany (wdk), Italy (Federazione Gomma Plastica), NL (NVR), Portugal (APIB), Spain (Consorcio), and Sweden, (SGI). That means that ETRMA represents 4100 companies in EU25, employing 360 000 individuals with a turnover exceeding EUR 42 billion while the exports do represent EUR 7 billion.Franc
